Airway Dentist in Draper for Kids, Teens, and Adults

Snoring, mouth breathing, jaw pain, and restless sleep often trace back to the airway. Dr. Jeff Buxton has spent more than 20 years in dental sleep medicine and breathing, and every airway consultation includes a 3D CBCT scan of the airway, jaws, and joints.

What Airway Dentistry Is

We start with how you breathe, then look at the teeth

Most dental visits focus on teeth. An airway dentist looks at the space behind them: the upper jaw, the tongue, and the airway that runs from the nose to the throat. The roof of the mouth is also the floor of the nose, so how the jaws grow can shape how easily air moves, day and night.

When the upper jaw is narrow or the tongue rests low, many people notice snoring, mouth breathing, crowded teeth, clenching, or sleep that never feels restful. At Toothpillow Breathing & Sleep Center, we look for the structural reason behind those signs and plan care around it, for kids as young as three, teens, and adults.

Signs Worth a Closer Look

Signs an airway evaluation may help

None of these mean something is wrong on their own. Together, they're worth a conversation.

1

Kids: snoring or mouth breathing

Regular snoring or an open mouth during the day or at night may point to a narrow airway or low tongue posture.

2

Kids: restless sleep, tired mornings

Tossing, grinding, dark circles, or waking up cranky may mean sleep isn't as restful as it looks.

3

Kids: crowded teeth, narrow jaw

A narrow upper jaw can leave less room for teeth, the tongue, and air through the nose. Earlier is easier.

4

Adults: snoring and waking tired

Snoring, gasping, or waking unrefreshed can be worth evaluating with proper sleep testing.

5

Adults: a CPAP you can't stand

If the CPAP is sitting in a drawer, there may be other options worth exploring with your physician.

6

Adults: jaw pain or headaches

Clenching, jaw clicking, or morning headaches can show up alongside how the jaw, bite, and airway work together.

Your First Step

It all starts with an airway consultation

Before anyone talks treatment, we get the full picture. Your consultation with Dr. Buxton includes:

  • A 3D CBCT scan of the airway, jaws, and joints
  • A digital intraoral scan (no goopy molds)
  • Photos and a hands-on exam of breathing, tongue, and bite
  • A plain-language walkthrough of what we see and what your options are

How We Evaluate

An airway consultation that shows you the whole picture

Your first visit is an airway consultation with Dr. Buxton and our team. We gather the records that show how you or your child breathe and grow:

  • 3D CBCT scan of the airway, jaws, and joints
  • Digital intraoral scan of the teeth, with no goopy molds
  • Photos of the face and bite
  • Exam of tongue posture, tongue mobility, lips, and breathing habits
  • Sleep data for adults, often from an at-home sleep test

Dr. Buxton then walks you through what the scan shows, in plain language, so you know what's going on and what your options are.

How Care Works

Airway care for every stage of life

Every plan is built around age, growth, and what the records show, so not everyone needs every step.

Kids: guide growth early

Care may begin with the Toothpillow appliance, a soft removable appliance worn at night, or palate expanders when the upper jaw needs more room. See kids airway dentistry.

Train the muscles

Myofunctional therapy helps the tongue, lips, and face support nasal breathing. If a tongue-tie is holding the tongue down, a laser frenectomy may be part of the plan (age 3 and up).

Adults: sleep test first

For snoring or suspected sleep apnea, we want sleep data before we treat. Sleep apnea treatment is coordinated with your sleep physician.

Adults: treat the structure

Options may include DOMEzero adult expansion with Spark clear aligners, oral appliance therapy, QuietNite laser snoring treatment, and TMJ care.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is an airway dentist?

An airway dentist looks at how the jaws, tongue, and airway affect breathing and sleep, not just the teeth. At Toothpillow, that starts with a 3D CBCT scan of the airway, jaws, and joints.

Do you see adults as well as kids?

Yes. We see kids from age three, teens, and adults. Care for kids often focuses on guiding growth; care for adults often focuses on sleep, snoring, CPAP alternatives, expansion, and TMJ.

What happens at the first visit?

Your first visit is an airway consultation: a 3D CBCT scan, a digital intraoral scan, photos, and an exam, followed by a review of the results with Dr. Buxton.

Do I need a sleep test?

Most kids start without one. For adults with snoring or suspected sleep apnea, we want sleep data before treating, often from an at-home sleep test.

Do you take insurance?

We're out of network with dental and medical plans. We may bill dental insurance depending on the procedure, provide documentation you can submit to medical insurance, accept HSA and FSA, and offer payment plans through Cherry.
